Director and writer Tatsuo Satō, a prominent figure in anime known for helming Martian Successor Nadesico and Bodacious Space Pirates, has died. His passing was announced by anime studio NAGOMI on Thursday, stating he succumbed to liver failure on April 24 at the age of 61. Satō had been receiving medical treatment prior to his death.

Satō's career spanned multiple decades, beginning with work as an animator and assistant director before transitioning to directing. He contributed to the early production of Chibi Maruko-chan and Gaki Deka. His directorial work includes a diverse range of titles such as Stellvia, Atom The Beginning, Shigofumi - Letters from the Departed, and the television series adaptation of Ninja Scroll.

Beyond his directorial efforts, Satō was a key creative force behind many of his projects. He served as head writer and director for the popular space opera Bodacious Space Pirates and its film continuation, Bodacious Space Pirates The Movie: Abyss of Hyperspace. He also wrote and directed Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars, which was based on his original story. His film Martian Successor Nadesico: The Motion Picture - Prince of Darkness and the Bodacious Space Pirates movie both earned Seiun Awards, while his short film Cat Soup received accolades at the Fantasia Film Festival and the Media Arts Festival.

Martian Successor Nadesico, which originally aired in Fall 1996 and ran for 26 episodes, remains a fan favorite, holding a 7.51 score on MyAnimeList from over 22,000 voters.
