The legendary Eikichi Onizuka is back. Takashi Sorimachi is set to reprise his role as the unconventional teacher in a new live-action series based on Tohru Fujisawa's GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka manga. The series will debut on Kansai TV and Fuji TV on July 20, marking Sorimachi's return to the character 28 years after his initial portrayal.

Directed by Satoru Nakajima and scripted by Kazuhiko Yukawa, this new installment shifts the setting from the Heisei era to the modern Reiwa period. The now 52-year-old Onizuka finds himself teaching at Seishin Academy, an institution focused on cultivating future leaders. The school utilizes tablets for information dissemination and features an anonymous "Teacher Feedback System" where low-ranked educators risk losing their homeroom status. This environment presents Onizuka with challenges like the commercialization of education, ranking systems, and a school seemingly detached from genuine well-being.

Onizuka's notoriously direct teaching style, which often put him at personal risk, is now considered problematic, leading to a string of job losses before his arrival at Seishin. He must navigate a system heavily reliant on social media and oversight, where true feelings are rarely expressed.

The GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka franchise has a rich history in live-action and anime. The original manga ran from 1997 to 2002, spawning numerous sequels and spin-offs. The property also inspired a highly-rated 1999 anime series produced by Studio Pierrot, which holds an 8.68 score on MyAnimeList from over 448,000 voters. Previous live-action adaptations include a 1998 series, a 2012 remake, and a 2024 television special titled GTO Revival.
