Kyoto Animation is set to produce an anime film adaptation of John Tarachine's Credits Roll Into the Sea manga, with a planned 2027 release. Taichi Ishidate, known for his work on Violet Evergarden and CITY The Animation, will direct the project, with Shochiku handling distribution.

The manga tells the story of Umiko, a 65-year-old woman grappling with the loss of her husband. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she visits a movie theater after decades and strikes up a conversation with Kai, a film student. Umiko's fascination with audience reactions catches Kai's attention, leading to an invitation to her home and a pivotal question: "You're someone who's interested in making films, aren't you?". This moment sparks Umiko's deep dive into the world of filmmaking.

Credits Roll Into the Sea began serialization in Akita Shoten's Mystery Bonita magazine in October 2020. The manga is set to conclude with its ninth compiled volume on May 15, following the eighth volume's release on July 17. Dark Horse Comics has licensed the manga for an English release, with the first volume scheduled for July 7.

The manga has garnered significant critical acclaim, topping the 2022 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings for female readers and ranking ninth in the 2022 Manga Taisho awards. It also received nominations for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2023 and 2025. Flag Pictures made the announcement on Monday.
