GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka is returning to live-action with Takashi Sorimachi reprising his role as the iconic delinquent teacher Eikichi Onizuka. A new 90-second trailer released Thursday showcases the 52-year-old Onizuka navigating the modern educational landscape at Seishin Academy, an institution focused on cultivating future leaders.
The sequel series moves the setting to the Reiwa era, where Onizuka's unconventional teaching methods, which once defined the franchise, are now considered problematic. Seishin Academy utilizes tablets for information dissemination and features a "Teacher Feedback System" where students anonymously rank educators, impacting their job status. Onizuka must contend with the commercialization of education, constant oversight, and a school environment that seems detached from genuine well-being.
Joining Sorimachi is Meru Nukumi as Mio Kashiwabara, the assistant homeroom teacher. The series is helmed by director Satoru Nakajima and scriptwriter Kazuhiko Yukawa, who return from previous live-action adaptations. The original GTO manga, which has garnered an impressive 8.68 score on MyAnimeList from over 448,000 voters, has a rich history of adaptations, including a popular 1999 anime from Studio Pierrot, a 2012 remake, and various specials and films.
The new GTO live-action series is set to premiere on Kansai TV and Fuji TV on July 20 at 10:00 PM JST. This revival continues the legacy of Tohru Fujisawa's work, which also includes prequels like GTO: The Early Years and ongoing manga installments like GTO: Paradise Lost Kai.
