The creative duo of Hiroshi Takashige and Tatsumi Hitomoji is bringing their science fiction work, The Last Terran, to a full-length run. The series, which originated as a one-shot in Kodansha’s special Young Magazine US English issue last August, will officially launch its serialization in the September issue of Monthly Young Magazine on August 20.
This expansion comes as part of a broader initiative by Kodansha to promote international talent and audience engagement. While the magazine initially planned for the top five poll winners to receive serialization, the overwhelming response led editorial staff to select four additional works—including The Last Terran—based on their creative impact and artistic merit. Titles like To Dusk and Twilight and Protocol Ryugu were also granted this opportunity, with several already active in their respective runs.
For Takashige, this project adds to an extensive career in the medium. He is perhaps best known for his foundational work on the classic action series Spriggan, which saw a resurgence via a Netflix adaptation by David Production in 2022, as well as the long-running thriller Until Death Do Us Part. With this new series, he and Hitomoji look to build upon the momentum generated by their initial one-shot, bridging the gap between Western-focused pilot projects and the core Japanese market.
