Higurashi: When They Cry is returning to television with a new anime project, announced by Kadokawa. Notably, Studio Deen, the animation studio behind the acclaimed 2006 series, is back at the helm. The original cast members are also confirmed to be reprising their iconic roles.

The announcement comes with a newly revealed teaser visual and an accompanying announcement video, giving fans a first glimpse of the upcoming project. The original Higurashi no Naku Koro ni anime, which adapted the first six chapters of 07th Expansion's psychological horror visual novel series, aired as a 26-episode run in Spring 2006. It remains a standout title, holding a 7.87 score on MyAnimeList from over 416,000 voters.

Following the success of the initial series, the franchise saw several continuations, including the 24-episode sequel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai in Summer 2007, the five-episode OVA Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei in 2009, and the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku: Outbreak OVA in 2013. More recently, Passione produced the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou in Fall 2020, followed by its sequel Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Sotsu in Summer 2021.

The Higurashi: When They Cry visual novel series first launched in 2002, with its eighth and final chapter concluding in 2006. The franchise has since expanded with numerous manga adaptations and updated visual novel releases, including the comprehensive Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Hou compilation. The series is known for its blend of horror, mystery, and psychological suspense, exploring dark themes in a rural Japanese setting.
