The upcoming television anime adaptation of A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage (Pen to Wappa to Jijitsu Kon) has unveiled its primary production team and cast, accompanied by a new teaser video. The series is slated to make its broadcast debut in January 2027.
Leading the voice cast are Tomoaki Maeno, who will portray the forty-year-old detective Eiji Kirisame, and Inori Minase, cast as the enigmatic witness Tsugumi Kuchinashi. The production is being handled by studio EMT Squared, with Takaaki Ishiyama—known for his work on Chaos;HEAd—serving as director. The creative team also includes series script supervisor Shigeru Murakoshi, character designer Miyuki Nakamura, and composer Kana Hashiguchi.
Based on the manga by Shinichi Sawaragi and Tanku Gasuyama, the story follows the unconventional dynamic between a seasoned detective and a high school student whose testimony is delivered entirely through sketches. The narrative takes a sharp turn when one of those sketches includes a marriage proposal, complicating their professional investigation.
Since its debut in Young Animal in 2022, the series has grown a steady following, currently boasting 400,000 copies in circulation. Yen Press, which acquired the English-language rights to the manga, released the first volume earlier this year, providing a bridge for international audiences to get acquainted with the source material ahead of the 2027 premiere.
