WuxiaWorld founder Ren (RWX) has officially reacquired the English-language web fiction platform from Tapas Entertainment. The move, announced on September 20, returns the company to independent ownership nearly five years after its acquisition by Kakao Entertainment. According to Ren, the decision was prompted by the upcoming March 31, 2027, closure of the Tapas North American service, which would have resulted in the shuttering of WuxiaWorld.

Ren acknowledged that the platform faces significant financial challenges compared to its status at the time of the 2021 sale to Kakao. While the company previously generated over US$300,000 in monthly gross profit, it recorded a gross loss of approximately US$30,000 in July 2026. To stabilize the business, Ren intends to transition the platform back to a startup-oriented model, which includes streamlining internal processes, cutting costs, and pausing unprofitable titles.

Moving forward, the platform aims to revitalize its content pipeline by acquiring new Korean web novel licenses and exploring Japanese and isekai fiction. Despite the current financial climate, Ren stated that WuxiaWorld will not pivot to machine translation. Long-term goals for the independent entity include exploring original user-generated content, multilingual support, and potential expansion into video or animation.
