The visionary special effects artist and director Jōji Tani, widely known by his professional moniker Screaming Mad George, has passed away at the age of 69. News of his death, which occurred on February 10, was shared this week via his management's social media channels. He is survived by his wife, Miki, and his daughter, Alice.
Before becoming a staple of practical effects in Hollywood, Tani gained notoriety as a punk rock musician with the band The Mad, where he developed a signature style defined by visceral, gory stage performances. This aesthetic served as a precursor to his prolific career in cinema, where he contributed to legendary horror and sci-fi films including Predator, Big Trouble in Little China, and multiple installments of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. His long-standing partnership with director Brian Yuzna resulted in cult classics like Society and Bride of Re-Animator.
Within the anime and manga community, Tani is best remembered for his 1991 directorial debut, The Guyver, a live-action adaptation of Yoshiki Takaya’s iconic Bio-Booster Armor Guyver series. His influence extended into the OVA space as well, where he contributed monster designs for Spirit Warrior. Additionally, he played a crucial role in bringing Japanese horror manga to Western audiences by co-translating Hideshi Hino’s Panorama of Hell for its 1993 English release.
