Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a major shift in its distribution strategy, confirming that physical disc production for all new PlayStation games will cease in January 2028. Following this date, all new game releases will be exclusively digital. This change does not impact titles already released or those scheduled for physical release before the January 2028 cutoff.

The company stated the decision reflects a growing consumer preference for digital media over physical discs. In conjunction with this move, Sony will also be closing the PlayStation Store for both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles. The store closures will occur in phases, beginning in August 2026 for Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with subsequent closures in other Latin American and Middle Eastern countries in late 2026, and finally in all remaining regions by July 2027.

These changes follow recent price adjustments from Sony. The company increased the cost of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles, along with the PlayStation Portal, effective April 2, citing global economic pressures. Additionally, monthly subscription prices for PlayStation Plus saw an increase for new customers in select regions starting May 18.
