Reed Hastings, a pivotal figure in the founding and growth of Netflix, will not stand for re-election to the company's board of directors when his term concludes in June. The streaming giant revealed this news in its latest quarterly shareholder letter, stating Hastings intends to dedicate his time to philanthropic endeavors and other personal projects.
Hastings, who co-founded Netflix with Marc Randolph in 1997, has been instrumental in transforming the entertainment landscape, initially with DVD rentals by mail before pioneering the streaming revolution. He transitioned from his role as co-CEO in January 2023, taking on the position of executive chairman, with Greg Peters joining Ted Sarandos as co-CEOs.
Prior to his departure from the board, Hastings has maintained a presence in the tech world, notably joining the board of AI company Anthropic in May 2025. His past board service includes significant roles at major corporations such as Facebook, Microsoft, and Bloomberg.
Netflix expressed deep gratitude for Hastings's contributions, highlighting his role in building a culture of innovation and high performance that has shaped the company and its global reach. Hastings's co-founder, Marc Randolph, departed Netflix in 2002.
