SNK and Plaion Replai have announced the NeoGeo AES+, a new home console that faithfully recreates the original Neo Geo AES hardware. Set for release on November 12, this console distinguishes itself by using original ASIC chips, eschewing software emulation or FPGA technology found in many modern retro consoles. This approach ensures compatibility with both legacy AES game cartridges and newly produced ones.
The NeoGeo AES+ will feature an HDMI output capable of 1080p video and low-latency audio, alongside traditional RCA AV output and a 3.5mm AUX port. It also includes a memory card slot for saving high scores, with support for a new battery-free memory card.
Three distinct versions of the AES+ will be offered. The standard edition, priced at $249.99, retains the original black color scheme. The $349.99 Anniversary Edition comes in white and includes a memory card, a wireless dongle for the arcade stick, and the Metal Slug cartridge. The premium $999.99 Ultimate Edition, in black, bundles all 10 launch titles on separate cartridges, along with wireless dongles for both the arcade stick and a gamepad.
At launch, 10 game cartridges will be available individually: Metal Slug, The King of Fighters 2002, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, Big Tournament Golf, Shock Troopers, Samurai Shodown V Special, Pulstar, Twinkle Star Sprites, Magician Lord, and Over Top. The original Neo Geo, released in 1990, was notable for its identical hardware between arcade (MVS) and home (AES) versions, allowing for 'arcade-perfect' ports and even save data transfer to arcade machines.
