Gou Tanabe, renowned for his manga adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror tales, has launched a new series based on the novella 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward'. The manga debuted on April 1st via Kadokawa's KadoComi website, serialized under the Comic Beam imprint.
The narrative centers on Marinus Bicknell Willett, a physician to the prominent Ward family of Rhode Island. Willett delves into the mysterious supposed madness of the young Charles Dexter Ward, uncovering a horrifying and ancient family legacy that stretches back centuries and directly involves his patient.
This new adaptation is part of Tanabe's ongoing commitment to bringing Lovecraft's works to manga. His previous notable works include 'At The Mountains Of Madness', which was nominated for Best Comic at the 46th Angoulême International Comics Festival, and 'The Call of Cthulhu', which earned a Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel award at the Bram Stoker Awards. Dark Horse Comics has published many of these adaptations in North America, including 'The Hound and Other Stories', 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth', 'The Colour Out of Space', and the upcoming 'The Dunwich Horror'.
Tanabe has also adapted other Lovecraft stories such as 'The Haunter of the Dark' and 'The Outsider'. His recent series, 'Short Stories about Dreamlands', concluded in April 2024, and 'Lovecraft no Genei' (The Lovecraft's Phantom) ran from June to December 2024.
