Dark Horse Manga announced at Anime NYC that it is significantly expanding its Vampire Hunter D catalog with the addition of a new original comic miniseries and a long-awaited manga translation. These projects continue the legacy of Hideyuki Kikuchi’s long-running dark fantasy series, which has remained a staple of the genre since its inception in 1983.
Leading the release schedule is Vampire Hunter D: Fortress of Blood, a four-issue comic series set to debut on December 16. The project features a creative team consisting of writer Chris Condon and artist Filipe Andrade. The series will feature variant covers from industry veterans, including the franchise’s iconic illustrator Yoshitaka Amano. The story follows D as he traverses a dangerous frontier to protect a group of outcasts from a vampire lord’s advancing army.
Following the comic, Dark Horse will release the English translation of Vampire Hunter D: Rose Princess in March 2027. This manga, illustrated by Saiko Takaki, adapts the ninth entry in the original novel series. The narrative focuses on the village of Sacri, where a vampire princess demands a brutal tribute from the local population, forcing D to intervene alongside a local woman named Elena.
These releases arrive as the franchise continues to maintain a strong presence in the West, bolstered by recent 40th-anniversary screenings of the 1985 OVA and ongoing availability on platforms like HIDIVE. The expansion also follows a busy period for the IP, which has seen recent audiobook adaptations and additional comic projects from Unified Pictures currently in development.
