South Korean entertainment giant CJ ENM is initiating a spin-off of its webtoon production label, Manhwa Family, into a separate company. This strategic move is part of a broader initiative by CJ ENM Studios to concentrate on its primary live-action content production business.
The plan, detailed in a regulatory filing on April 21, involves a physical split of Manhwa Family's webtoon and comics publishing operations. The new subsidiary, tentatively named Manhwagajok, is set to officially launch on June 2, following a shareholder vote on April 30. CJ ENM first invested in Manhwa Family in 2021 and completed its acquisition in 2022, integrating it into CJ ENM Studios alongside other production labels focused on film and drama.
While CJ ENM Studios will continue to manage labels like Bon Factory and Vlad for live-action content, Manhwa Family will operate independently, specializing in webtoons and animation. A company official stated that this separation will enable each business unit to enhance its expertise and pursue specialized strategies with greater autonomy. Industry observers, however, suggest this spin-off could also be a prelude to a potential sale, as the structure facilitates easier divestment or attraction of external investment.
This restructuring aligns with CJ ENM's recent activities, including its bid for the streaming platform Watcha, indicating a portfolio reshaping around video-centric assets and a potential divestment of non-core businesses. Analysts believe this move will allow CJ ENM Studios to sharpen its focus on film and series production while improving financial flexibility through possible monetization of its webtoon division.
