Golden Axe, the legendary 1989 arcade beat-'em-up, is expanding into the world of animation with a new series set to debut on Paramount+ this September 16. The project, which was originally slated for a Comedy Central run, shifts to the streaming platform to deliver its 10-episode run, as confirmed by a newly released trailer.

The series reunites the iconic trio of Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead as they embark on another quest to defeat the persistent villain Death Adder. Adding a comedic twist to the high-fantasy premise, the group is joined by Hampton Squib, an incompetent adventurer whose ambition far outstrips his combat skills. The ensemble cast features Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler, Lisa Gilroy as Tyris Flare, Matthew Rhys as Gilius Thunderhead, and Danny Pudi as Squib.

Production is being handled by the renowned studio Titmouse, with Mike McMahan—known for his work on Star Trek: Lower Decks and Solar Opposites—serving as co-creator and executive producer alongside Joe Chandler. The production team also includes heavy hitters from CBS Eye Animation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and Original Film, with direct oversight from Sega executives to ensure the adaptation honors the source material's legacy.

This adaptation arrives as Sega continues to revitalize the franchise, following the announcement of a new, untitled Golden Axe video game entry during the 2023 Game Awards. With the original arcade title having already inspired a 2018 stage play, this animated project represents the latest effort to bring the classic side-scroller's world to a modern, narrative-focused medium.
