Anime International Company (AIC) has secured a definitive legal victory in its effort to reclaim its status as a shareholder of AIC Rights. Following a multi-year civil lawsuit that reached the Supreme Court of Japan, the ruling mandates that AIC be recognized as a shareholder, effectively overturning previous efforts by the subsidiary and producer Yoshikazu Maeda to block the transfer.
The litigation began in August 2021, centered on the ownership of shares that had been contested since the company split in 2015. While AIC Rights argued that the shares in question had been sold to third parties, the Tokyo District Court ruled in favor of AIC in March 2025. Subsequent appeals to the Tokyo High Court were rejected, and the Supreme Courtโs decision to decline a final appeal on May 27 solidified the lower courts' rulings.
This outcome is significant for the future of several major anime franchises. Since the 2015 split, AIC Rights has controlled a vast library of legacy titles, including Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! and recent installments of the Tenchi Muyo! series. The management of these properties has been complex, particularly since an April 2021 agreement saw AIC Rights transfer partial ownership of iconic series like Megazone 23, Bubblegum Crisis, and Gall Force to Toei Agency.
With the court confirming AIC's position as a shareholder, the company is now positioned to exert more influence over the management and licensing of its historical catalog. The resolution of this case brings an end to a period of instability regarding the control of these foundational works, which have remained staples of the studio's legacy.
