The animated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, has achieved remarkable box office success, crossing the $308 million mark in the U.S. after its second weekend. The film continued its strong performance by topping the domestic charts again, earning an estimated $69 million, a modest 48% drop from its opening weekend.
Globally, the film has amassed an impressive estimated $628,765,135 worldwide. This figure places it as the second highest-grossing film of the year internationally, trailing only the Chinese film Pegasus 3. The movie's initial five-day run in North America brought in an estimated $190 million, with a worldwide debut of $372.5 million.
Produced by Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures, the film builds on the success of its predecessor. It has already secured its place as the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history. Furthermore, the Super Mario franchise now stands as the only animated series with two films opening to over $350 million worldwide, and joins an elite group of franchises with multiple films surpassing $100 million in their three-day North American openings.
Directed again by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic with a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, the film features a star-studded cast. Returning actors include Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. New additions include Brie Larson as Rosalina, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Donald Glover as Yoshi, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, Luis Guzmán as Wart, and Glen Powell as Fox McCloud.
