The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced a strategic plan to dramatically boost the overseas market for anime, targeting 6 trillion yen (approximately US$37 billion) by 2033. This ambitious figure aims to nearly quadruple the market's value in less than a decade.
METI's strategy focuses on two key areas: fostering the creation of more "blockbuster" anime titles and improving compensation for industry professionals. The ministry plans to allocate resources to support large-scale production efforts, enhance the reach of distribution platforms, and strengthen development infrastructure.
This specific goal for anime is part of a broader governmental initiative to expand the global reach of Japan's creative industries to a total of 20 trillion yen by 2033. Other sectors, including games and manga, also have significant growth targets outlined in the plan. The 2024 global anime market reached a record 3.84 trillion yen, with the overseas segment showing robust growth of 26%.
