X² - Double X, the OVA project based on CLAMP's X/1999 franchise, is receiving its first-ever official digital release worldwide on Crunchyroll starting June 10. The remastered music video compilation, originally released on VHS in 1993, will be available outside of Japan, China, and South Korea.
X JAPAN leader YOSHIKI spoke with Anime News Network about the significance of the project, which features four of his band's songs: "Silent Jealousy," "Kurenai," "Endless Rain," and "X." The first three utilize CLAMP's illustrations from the X/1999 manga in a slideshow format, while the "X" track includes an anime segment co-produced by MADHOUSE. YOSHIKI noted that the collaboration felt natural, with the dramatic and cinematic quality of his compositions fitting CLAMP's visual style.
At the time of its release, collaborations between rock bands and the anime world were rare. YOSHIKI recalled being drawn to the shared name with the X/1999 manga and was impressed by CLAMP's artwork, seeing a connection between their respective worlds. The OVA, named "Double X" to signify the partnership between the manga and the band, sold out instantly upon its initial VHS release and has since become a collector's item.
YOSHIKI expressed excitement for a new generation to discover the work and for fans globally to now have access to it. He highlighted anime's unique ability to connect with audiences emotionally and believes that combining music and anime can create something truly special. The X² - Double X OVA also paved the way for the 1996 X movie, directed by Rintarō, which featured X JAPAN's "Forever Love" as its theme song.
