The latest installment in the long-running franchise, Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway, has set a new opening weekend record for the series. The film pulled in ¥3.5 billion (approximately $21.9 million USD) and sold over 2.3 million tickets in its first three days of release, debuting at the top of the Japanese box office charts.
This box office performance surpasses the previous record holder, Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, which earned ¥3.43 billion in its initial three-day run last year. Fallen Angel of the Highway also achieved a new franchise record for its opening day alone, grossing ¥1.13 billion, exceeding One-eyed Flashback's ¥1.05 billion opening day earnings.
The film introduces Chihaya Hagiwara, a new character voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro. Directed by Takahiro Hasui and written by Takahiro ÅŒkura, the story also features returning characters like Inspector Jugo Yokomizo and teenage detective Masumi Sera, alongside Chihaya's late brother Kenji Hagiwara and his Police Academy classmate Jinpei Matsuda.
Fallen Angel of the Highway's success follows a strong performance from Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, which became the 20th highest-grossing film in Japan of all time. The franchise's highest earner remains Case Closed: The Million-dollar Pentagram, which grossed ¥15.8 billion and was Japan's top film of 2024.
