The Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) announced during the TIFFCOM trade event that the global anime market grew by 15.8% in 2025, reaching a record 4.45 trillion yen (approximately US$28.2 billion). According to the report, the overseas market contributed 2.54 trillion yen to this total, while the domestic market accounted for 1.91 trillion yen. This year marks the fourth time the overseas market has surpassed domestic earnings, following trends observed in 2020, 2023, and 2024. AJA’s calculations encompass a broad range of revenue streams, including streaming, film, merchandising, music, and licensing. Masahiro Hasegawa, editor-in-chief of the AJA's report, noted that production companies are increasingly securing equity in their projects to better participate in international revenue. This growth aligns with the Japanese government's broader strategy to expand overseas entertainment sales to 20 trillion yen by 2033. The full AJA Anime Industry Report 2026 is scheduled for release in early December.
