The original anime Candy Caries has officially begun streaming on Amazon Prime Video, with its first episode available starting Wednesday. The series, a collaboration between director Tomoki Misato and Wit Studio, is accessible in North America, Oceania, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Central Asia. Additionally, the first episode has been released worldwide on the anime's YouTube channel, excluding select territories.
Candy Caries follows the comedic adventures of Ame, a young girl with a fondness for sweets, and Caries, the personification of tooth decay residing in her mouth. The slapstick narrative explores their unusual relationship, with Caries affectionately referring to Ame as 'Mama' and frequently holding sway over her body.
The anime features a voice cast including Miyuki Satō as Ame and Hana Takeda as Caries, alongside Jin Katagiri as the Mad Dentist and Ryōgo Matsumaru as Harold. Tomoki Misato, who previously directed the stop-motion hit Pui Pui Molcar, helms the series at TORUKU from WIT STUDIO. The production also boasts a creative team with Kenshirō Morii as assistant director and Chiaki Nishinaka handling scripts.
Originally revealed as a stop-motion promotional video in 2021, Candy Caries represents Misato's directorial debut for a television anime series. The distinctive visual style, described by Misato as semi-three-dimensional and 'flat like an illustration, but plump and thick,' was achieved using plastic board and acrylic.
