The anime adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi ABe's All You Need Is Kill light novel is now available for digital purchase and rental. GKIDS and Warner Bros. Japan announced that the film will ship on Blu-ray Disc on July 7, with Shout! Studios handling distribution. The Blu-ray will include a suite of bonus features, such as director scene breakdowns, a pre-screening discussion with the director and cast, storyboards with commentary, an art gallery, and promotional teasers.
Previously released theatrically in North America on January 16, the film was distributed by GKIDS across multiple territories including North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Audiences could experience the film in its original Japanese with English subtitles or opt for an English dub. The anime first premiered in Japan on January 9.
Directed by Kenichiro Akimoto at STUDIO4°C, All You Need Is Kill retells the light novel's story from a different perspective than both the original novel and the live-action Hollywood adaptation, Edge of Tomorrow. The narrative follows Keiji Kiriya, a new recruit who finds himself trapped in a time loop during a battle against alien invaders known as Mimics. The theme song, "Tsuretette," was specially written for the anime by singer-songwriter AKASAKI.
The original novel, published in English by Viz Media in 2009, also spawned a manga by Takeshi Obata and Ryōsuke Takeuchi, and a full-color graphic novel adaptation. The story's unique premise has captured international attention, leading to screenings at numerous film festivals including Annecy, Fantasia, New York Comic Con, Sitges, and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.
