The Witch on the Holy Night (Mahōtsukai no Yoru) project is gearing up for a major cross-media debut. During the FGO Fes. 2026 event, it was confirmed that the highly anticipated anime film will open in Japanese theaters on November 20. In a strategic move to maximize the release, the original visual novel—previously released on consoles and Steam—will also arrive on smartphone platforms on that same date.
To commemorate the announcement, the production team unveiled a "double visual" set. The first illustration was crafted by Hirokazu Koyama, the longtime graphics lead for the visual novel, while the second was produced by the film's animation studio, ufotable. A trailer highlighting these visuals was also released, showcasing the studio's signature aesthetic applied to Kinoko Nasu’s late-80s urban fantasy setting.
The film will feature the return of its primary voice cast, including Haruka Tomatsu as the reluctant mage heir Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa as the enigmatic witch Alice Kuonji, and Yūsuke Kobayashi as the transfer student Sōjūrō Shizuki. The story explores Aoko's forced apprenticeship into the arcane world, a narrative that serves as a vital foundation for the broader "Nasuverse."
Given the franchise's deep ties to other Type-Moon pillars like Tsukihime and The Garden of Sinners, the film is a significant release for long-time fans. With the console versions of the visual novel already surpassing 150,000 copies sold worldwide, the simultaneous launch of the mobile port and the film looks to further solidify the title's standing as a cornerstone of the studio's catalog.
