Production company Hive Media Corp has unveiled the principal cast for Inside Men: The Birth of Villains, a prequel to the acclaimed 2015 South Korean political thriller. The project shifts the timeline to the late 1980s, documenting the early days of the media, political, and corporate alliance that defined the original film’s corrupt landscape.
Jung-woo Ha takes on the role of newspaper reporter Kang-hee Lee, a character previously portrayed by Yoon-sik Baek. Joining him is Bo-hyun Ahn, who steps into the role of Sang-goo Ahn—the ambitious entertainment executive originally played by Byung-hun Lee. The cast is rounded out by Hae-joon Park as the rising lawmaker Pil-woo Jang and Sung-il Jung as Mirae Group chairman Hyun-soo Oh, both of whom are key to the formation of the emerging power structure.
Adapted from the unfinished webtoon by creator Tae-ho Yoon, the film aims to flesh out the backstories of the figures who would eventually dominate the political underworld. While initial industry reports suggested the project might span a trilogy, the latest production update leaves the final scope of the series open to speculation.
Tae-ho Yoon is a veteran in the medium, perhaps best known internationally for Misaeng: Incomplete Life, which helped cement his reputation for grounded, character-driven narratives. While the Inside Men webtoon remains without an official English translation, the prequel film serves as a significant expansion of the franchise's dark, gritty exploration of South Korean power dynamics.
