We Are Aliens (Ware Ware wa Uchūjin), the latest project from NOTHING NEW, has released a new promotional video that leans heavily into the aesthetics of Japan's Heisei era. The film follows the emotional journey of Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, two childhood friends whose bond was severed by jealousy and misunderstandings, forcing them to reconcile their past as they navigate adulthood.
The film’s production is led by Kōhei Kadowaki, known for his work on the second season of BEASTARS and various YOASOBI music videos. Kadowaki takes on a massive creative load, serving as director, writer, storyboard artist, and editor. The project also features a notable international collaboration with the French studio Miyu Productions, which joined the effort in mid-2025.
Ryōta Bandō and Amane Okayama provide the voices for the adult versions of Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, respectively, while child actors Yūto Maki and Tasuku Nakagome portray the duo during their elementary school years. The cast is rounded out by a diverse group of talent, including Ten Yamasaki of Sakurazaka46 and comedian Kemuri Matsui. The musical score is composed by Yaffle, with the theme song "Sasakure" performed by adieu.
Following a successful festival run that included screenings at Cannes and Annecy, the film is scheduled to open in Japan on September 25. The project saw significant grassroots support, successfully raising over 9.6 million yen through a crowdfunding campaign earlier this year. International audiences can expect to see the film eventually, as CHARADES has already secured distribution deals across several Asian markets, including Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
