The upcoming anime film We Are Aliens (Ware Ware wa Uchūjin) has released a new "theme song trailer," providing a fresh look at the project alongside a preview of its theme song, "Sasakure," performed by the singer adieu. The video was directed by Kōhei Kadowaki, who is also serving as the film's writer, storyboard artist, and editor.
Set to open in Japanese theaters on September 25, the film follows the complex relationship between two childhood friends, Tsubasa and Gyōtarō, as they navigate the lingering effects of past misunderstandings into adulthood. The cast features Ryōta Bandō and Amane Okayama as the adult versions of the protagonists, with child actors Yūto Maki and Tasuku Nakagome voicing the characters during their youth. The production is a collaborative effort between the Japanese company NOTHING NEW and the French studio Miyu Productions.
Following its festival circuit run—which included screenings at Cannes and Annecy—the film has secured international distribution across several Asian markets, including Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The project's development was bolstered by a successful crowdfunding campaign earlier this year, which surpassed its initial 8 million yen goal to reach over 9.6 million yen in support of production and distribution efforts.
Given the film's extensive festival presence prior to its domestic premiere, it remains to be seen how the broader Japanese audience will respond to the project's unique international production background. Does the involvement of a French studio like Miyu Productions change your expectations for the film's visual style?
