The upcoming anime film Wasted Chef has unveiled its first teaser visual, revealed at the Annecy Animation Showcase during the 79th Cannes International Film Festival. The visual carries the tagline, "That day, 'you' and 'taste' disappeared from the world."
A special trailer for Wasted Chef is scheduled to premiere in advance at revival screenings of the anime film Pompo: The Cinéphile in Japan, beginning May 29. Director Takayuki Hirao, animation studio CLAP, character designer Shingo Adachi, and composer Kenta Matsukuma are all returning to collaborate on Wasted Chef after working together on Pompo: The Cinéphile.
Animation studio CLAP also announced that further details about the project will be shared at the "Pompo: The Cinéphile 5th Anniversary Stage Greeting" event on May 31. The film, initially announced in June 2023, is reportedly slated for completion in 2027. It follows a young chef searching for a lost flavor in a desolate city, whose cooking awakens memories but faces a dark force threatening desire itself.
Wasted Chef was among the international works-in-progress featured at the Annecy Animation Showcase, part of Cannes' expanded "Cannes Animation" initiative. Japan is the Country of Honor for the 2026 Marché du Film, with the event featuring specific programming for Japanese animation.
