The anime industry is mourning the loss of Naoki Bandō, who passed away on September 28 at the age of 69. His management firm, Production Ace, confirmed the news on Friday, stating that the actor had been receiving medical care prior to his death.
Bandō built an extensive filmography over a career lasting more than 40 years. He is perhaps best remembered by audiences for his work in the Yo-kai Watch series as the voice of Robonyan. His presence in the mecha genre was equally significant; he portrayed Torenov Y. Minovsky in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin and Vargas Dyson in Mobile Suit Gundam AGE. His work also extended to the Brave series, where he voiced characters like Silvarion in The Brave of Gold Goldran and Guard Star in The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird.
Beyond his contributions to domestic animation, Bandō was a staple in the Japanese dubbing industry. He provided voices for characters in major international productions, including the medical drama ER, the action series 24, and films such as The Matrix and Casino Royale. His versatility also crossed into gaming, with notable appearances in titles like Shadow of the Colossus and Baten Kaitos.
His passing marks the end of a long and varied career that touched multiple generations of viewers. While his filmography remains a testament to his range, the industry now faces the quiet transition of his ongoing roles to new performers.
