Topco Media, the parent company behind the popular webtoon platform Toptoon and the web novel service Novelpia, has officially rebranded as Ankey AX Co., Ltd. The change, approved during an extraordinary shareholders' meeting on September 10, signals a strategic shift toward integrating artificial intelligence deeper into their existing content ecosystem. Following the completion of registration and listing procedures, the company will also adopt the Ankey AX name on the KOSDAQ.
This transition marks a move beyond traditional webtoon distribution. Ankey AX is now formally incorporating AI content, virtual human development, and automated animation solutions into its business model. The company has already begun leveraging its internal AI studio to transform its existing webtoon intellectual property into new formats, including AI-generated short-form videos and interactive character experiences.
Central to this expansion is the 'Toptoon Chat' service, which launched in Korea this past March and has since rolled out to international markets including Japan, Taiwan, and North America. The service allows users to engage in one-on-one conversations with characters from the company's webtoon library using the same currency system as the main platform. Additionally, the company has introduced 'World Chat,' a feature designed to facilitate simultaneous interactions with multiple characters.
Why it matters: By rebranding, the company is positioning its webtoon and web novel libraries as raw material for a broader AI-driven content suite. While the company has confirmed this shift in business focus, it remains to be seen how these AI-generated storytelling tools will impact the production speed or creative direction of their core webtoon releases.
