Toei Animation is set to debut its inaugural original short film, FOXING: Kitsuné-tsuki, under its new Eterna Animation banner. The film, which explores themes of isolation and self-discovery through a character designer's journey, will make its premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 18. It is also slated for competition for the Satoshi Kon Award for Excellence in Animation at Fantasia.
Following its Fantasia debut, Kitsuné-tsuki will screen at the Indy Shorts Film Festival on July 22 and 23, and later at the Regina International Film Festival and Awards from August 12 to 22. The short centers on Shinano, a character designer grappling with monotony and a lack of belonging, who finds her inner loneliness materialized through her own discarded creations. Directed, written, and designed by Takeru Shinozuka, the film marks his commercial directorial debut.
FOXING: Kitsuné-tsuki is the first production from Eterna Animation, a new brand launched by Toei Animation to foster original works and nurture emerging talent. Established in celebration of Toei Animation's 70th anniversary, Eterna Animation aims to create lasting works with artistic freedom and emotional impact, guided by core values of originality, exclusivity, artistry, quality, and decency. The short film's music is composed by Daisuke Sakaguchi, with Miho Wataya in the starring role.
