The chilling urban legend of The Ghost of Bongcheon-Dong is making the jump from digital panels to cinema. Lotte Entertainment confirmed on October 7 that production for the live-action film adaptation began on October 5, bringing the infamous horror webtoon to life with a fresh cast.

Arin, known for her work with the K-pop group OH MY GIRL, has been cast as the protagonist Su-yeon, a woman caught in a supernatural spiral after moving into a Seoul apartment complex built on cursed land. She will be joined by Chan-young Yoon, who is set to portray Tae-oh, a character gifted with the ability to perceive spirits. The film will explore the origins of the centuries-old curse that haunts the residents of Bongcheon-dong.

Originally published by Horang in 2011, the story gained widespread notoriety for its jump-scare-heavy presentation within the The Vault of Horror: A Collection of Nightmares anthology. The webtoon saw a resurgence in 2020 when it was remastered for the Horang's Nightmare collection. While the production is now underway, Lotte Entertainment has yet to provide a release window for the film.

Why it matters: The original webtoon is widely considered a landmark title in digital horror storytelling due to its innovative use of scrolling-based scares. With production already active, the primary question remains whether the film will lean into the original's short-form, high-intensity pacing or expand the narrative into a feature-length supernatural mystery.
