The North American webtoon platform Tapas has confirmed it will permanently cease operations on March 31, 2027. According to an updated FAQ, the closure will result in the total loss of user access to the platform, including previously unlocked episodes and purchased content. Unlike some digital storefronts that allow for offline viewing or library migration, Tapas stated that users will not be able to transfer their content to other Kakao-owned services, such as Kakao Page or Kakao WEBTOON.
Financial operations on the platform have already begun to wind down. Effective October 1, users can no longer acquire additional Ink, the platform's virtual currency. While existing Ink can still be used to unlock episodes until the final shutdown date, the company has indicated that no refunds will be issued for remaining balances. Furthermore, there are no plans for final sales or special promotional events to clear out remaining digital inventory.
For creators, the platform remains open for new uploads for the time being, though the long-term status of individual series remains tied to specific creator contracts. Tapas has noted that it will review exclusivity clauses on a case-by-case basis, and creators wishing to remove their work prior to the shutdown may submit requests through the company's inquiry portal. No plans for a bulk migration of the platform's library to another service have been announced.
This closure marks the final step in Kakao Entertainment's retreat from direct North American platform operations. The company previously shuttered the webnovel platform Radish in 2025 to consolidate its focus on Tapas. This decision follows a significant 2021 investment of approximately US$780 million to acquire both platforms, signaling a major shift in Kakao’s international strategy as it simultaneously consolidates its domestic South Korean platforms.
