The long-awaited follow-up to the cult classic Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space is officially heading to theaters. The new film, Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark, will debut simultaneously in Japan and the United States on January 22. The announcement arrived alongside a full trailer and key visual, showcasing the return of the franchise's signature psychedelic, neo-noir aesthetic.

Returning creative duo K. and kuno, known collectively as t.o.L., are back at the helm to write, direct, and compose the project. The narrative shifts to a futuristic Cat Tokyo, where the chain-smoking feline protagonist Tamala teams up with her friend Michelangelo to investigate a series of disappearances linked to the mysterious Catty & Co. corporation. Kentaro Nemoto also returns to lead the animation direction and character design, joined by a specialized CGI team including Kenji Okada and Michio Tsutsumoto.

While the original 2002 film remained a niche title for years, Deaf Crocodile recently brought it to North American home video for the first time. The sequel has already begun its festival circuit, with a world premiere at Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival earlier this summer and an upcoming screening at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain this October.

Given the significant gap between the original film and this sequel, the simultaneous international release marks a major shift in accessibility for the franchise. It remains to be seen if this wider distribution strategy will help the surreal, experimental series find a new audience beyond its long-standing cult following.
