During Thursday's State of Play, Bandai Namco Entertainment unveiled a new trailer for Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, highlighting the upcoming "Genesis Maidens" DLC. The expansion is slated for a winter release and marks the debut of Mito, a character originally introduced in the Sword Art Online: Progressive film series, as a playable addition to the action RPG.
The DLC aims to flesh out the early stages of the game's setting, introducing fresh storylines across the first and second floors of Aincrad. In addition to the narrative expansion, the update brings mechanical changes to the title, most notably the inclusion of the Curved Sword weapon class and a new system for armor enhancement.
Echoes of Aincrad arrived on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam this past July. The game allows players to navigate the infamous death game alongside familiar faces like Kirito and Asuna, with various editions offering additional content such as the "Unanswered//butterfly" promotional anime and digital art assets.
With the addition of Mito, the game continues to bridge the gap between the original Sword Art Online narrative and the Progressive side-story. It remains to be seen if this DLC will signal a larger trend of incorporating Progressive characters into the game's post-launch support.
