Nintendo has unveiled a new entry in the Star Fox series, simply titled Star Fox. This title is a remake of the classic 1997 Nintendo 64 game, Star Fox 64, and is slated for release on the Switch 2 on June 25. The remake promises updated graphics, a new art style, and various gameplay enhancements, including a multiplayer option.
The upcoming Star Fox will retain the core mechanics and level design of the original Star Fox 64. However, it introduces new cinematic briefings and fully voiced dialogue within its Campaign Mode, complemented by a fresh orchestral score. Players will have three difficulty settings to choose from in the campaign. Additionally, a new Challenge Mode allows players to revisit completed levels with fresh objectives and two distinct difficulty settings. Both Campaign and Challenge Modes will support cooperative play, enabling two players to share piloting and gunnery duties on the same system or via GameShare with GameChat, utilizing Joy-Con Mouse Controls.
Multiplayer is a significant addition, with Star Fox featuring a Battle Mode for 4-on-4 combat across three distinct game types. The game will offer online matchmaking, private custom matches, and online play through GameShare via GameChat.
This remake follows a history of Star Fox adaptations. Star Fox 64 itself was a reimagining of the 1993 SNES title, Star Fox. The game previously received a remake for the Nintendo 3DS as Star Fox 64 3D in 2011, and later Star Fox Zero for the Wii U in 2016. Star Fox 64 was also made available digitally on the Switch in 2021 through its Nintendo Classics service. Notably, Fox McCloud, the series' protagonist, made an appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which premiered on April 1.
