A new video message from director Minoru Ōta has been released for the upcoming Sparks of Tomorrow television anime. The message offers a personal look from Ōta, who is making his directorial debut with this series after extensive work as a key animator and episode director on titles like Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S.
Sparks of Tomorrow is set to premiere on July 5, airing on Sundays at 11:00 p.m. on Tokyo MX and 11:30 p.m. on BS11, with additional broadcasts on ABC TV and TV Aichi. For global audiences, the anime will be exclusively available on Netflix, also starting July 5 at 11:00 p.m. JST.
The series boasts a notable voice cast, including Yūma Uchida as Kihachi Sakamoto and Sora Amamiya as Inako Momokawa. The production team includes Tatsuhiko Urahata handling series scripts and Kohei Okamura as chief animation director and character designer. The anime is based on a novel by Hiro Yuki, which won an honorable mention at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards in 2017 and was published by KA Esuma Bunko.
The story is set in the summer of 1907 and follows 15-year-old Inako Momokawa, who struggles with her daily life and her father's expectations. Her world changes when she meets Kihachi Sakamoto, a young man who dismisses the gods and champions the new age of electricity. As marriage plans loom for Inako, she and Kihachi embark on a journey across Kyoto and Shiga prefectures to find a mysterious book titled the "Electrical Catalog," written by Kihachi in his youth, which may be the only way to halt her impending marriage.
