Toshio Masuda, a prolific director and screenwriter whose work helped define the golden age of Nikkatsu action cinema and the iconic Space Battleship Yamato franchise, has died at the age of 98. Reports from major Japanese outlets Mainichi Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun confirmed that the filmmaker passed away from old age on August 26.

Masuda’s influence on the anime industry was profound, particularly regarding the Yamato series. Beyond directing the 1977 compilation film, he served as a director and scriptwriter for several foundational entries, including Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, The New Voyage, and Be Forever Yamato. He also acted as chief supervisor for the 1983 film Final Yamato and later returned to the franchise as general supervisor for 2009's Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection.

Outside of animation, Masuda was a highly respected craftsman in the Japanese film industry. He famously co-directed the Japanese sequences for the 1970 war epic Tora! Tora! Tora! and earned multiple Japan Academy Film Prize nominations for his live-action work. In 2018, the Japan Academy Film Prize Association honored his lifelong contributions with an Award for Distinguished Service.

While his legacy is cemented by his 82-film career, his work on Space Battleship Yamato remains a cornerstone of the series' history. The Japan Academy Film Prize Association officially expressed their condolences following the news, marking the end of a career that bridged the gap between classic studio-era filmmaking and the evolution of modern anime.
