The music industry is mourning the loss of singer and composer Duncan Sheik, who died in Manhattan on September 17 at the age of 56 following cardiac arrest. Sheik, a celebrated figure in both pop music and theater, leaves behind a significant body of work, including his final project: the musical adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s manga Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen.

Sheik served as the composer and lyricist for the Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen stage production. Despite his passing, the show is moving forward as planned, with previews set to begin this Friday in New York City. The production is scheduled for its official off-Broadway premiere on October 15.

Beyond his recent work in anime-inspired theater, Sheik was a highly decorated artist. He gained widespread recognition in the 1990s for his hit single "Barely Breathing," which earned him a Grammy nomination. His transition to musical theater was marked by immense success, most notably winning Tony Awards for his score for the 2006 hit Spring Awakening. His diverse portfolio also included compositions for American Psycho, Twelfth Night, and The Secret Life of Bees.
