Minami's Lover (Minami-kun no Koibito), the long-running manga series by Shungiku Uchida, is heading to the stage as a musical production. The show is scheduled to run from December 6 through December 16 at the Nippon Seinenkan Hall in Tokyo. This latest adaptation introduces a notable creative shift, reimagining the central high school romance as a male couple, with the characters Minami and Chiyokō at the heart of the story.
The production has tapped a diverse cast to share the lead roles. Shunsei Ōta of the idol group OCTPATH and Who-ya from Who-ya Extended will alternate in the role of Sōsuke Minami. Meanwhile, ICEx member Sena Takeno and actor Ryō Sekoguchi will share the role of Chiyokō Horikiri. The supporting cast includes Yumiko Takahashi, Yūka Tano, and Yūka Akino, among others.
Behind the scenes, Yuka Arai is handling the script, while Tsuneyasu Motoyoshi serves as director and lyricist. The musical score is composed by Oreno Graffiti, with choreography provided by Genta Yamaguchi. This project marks the latest iteration of a story that has been a staple of Japanese pop culture since its 1986 debut in Monthly Manga Garo.
While the source material has seen numerous live-action television adaptations since 1990—most recently in 2024 with a gender-swapped premise—this musical marks a distinct departure in format. The original manga, which Fantagraphics publishes in English, remains a cult classic for its exploration of intimacy and gender dynamics through its surreal, shrunken-protagonist conceit. Given the series' history of frequent reinterpretation, it remains to be seen how this stage musical will balance the manga's established themes with its new casting direction.
