The culinary saga Oishinbo is returning to the screen. During the Shin-Ei Animation 50th Anniversary special stage at the ABEMA Anime Festival 2026, the studio announced that a new television anime titled Shin Oishinbo is currently in production. A promotional video accompanied the reveal, confirming that the studio behind the 1988 original is returning to the franchise.
This project revisits the work of Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanazaki, whose manga began serialization in 1983 and eventually spanned 111 volumes. While the source material has remained on hiatus since 2014, its cultural footprint remains substantial, having previously inspired a 136-episode anime series that aired from 1988 to 1992. VIZ Media previously introduced the series to English-speaking readers through seven themed compilation volumes released between 2009 and 2010.
Why it matters: The return of Shin-Ei Animation suggests a direct lineage to the 1988 adaptation, though the studio has yet to clarify if this project will serve as a reboot or a continuation. Given the manga's long-standing hiatus, the narrative scope of this new adaptation remains an open question for long-time readers.
