NHK is set to broadcast an animated adaptation of Shiroi Hata (White Flag), a poignant World War II manga by legendary creator Shigeru Mizuki. The special, titled Iwo Jima no Shiroi Hata (The White Flag at Iwo Jima), will debut this Sunday, August 16, as a feature presentation within the network's NHK Special documentary series.
The narrative centers on the tragic story of Lieutenant Nishiōeda, an Imperial Japanese Army officer during the Battle of Iwo Jima. In a direct defiance of the military's "fight to the death" doctrine, Nishiōeda chose to raise a white flag of surrender to preserve the lives of his subordinates, an act that ultimately led to his execution for treason. Mizuki, who served in the war and lost an arm during his service, drew inspiration for the story from accounts shared by a friend of his brother.
