The upcoming anime short 20001 An Earth Odyssey is set to make its festival debut on July 18 during the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. A collaborative project between Salamander Pictures and Nippon Animation, the film was previously teased to industry professionals at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this past June.

The narrative takes a comedic, surreal look at the distant future, specifically the year 20,001. Following the extinction of the human race, a trio of extraterrestrial explorers—Captain Kepo, the analytical Alcia, and the intuitive rookie Regal—touch down on Earth to uncover the cause of our civilization's collapse. The humor stems from their well-intentioned but wildly inaccurate interpretations of human artifacts, such as mistaking an umbrella for a high-tech communications tool.

The production features a notable creative team, with Haruki Kasugamori directing and character designs provided by industry veteran Kazuto Nakazawa. The original story and production were spearheaded by Taiki Sakurai, known for his work on Pokémon Concierge, while the score is composed by Akira Miyagawa. The film’s voice cast features Yōji Ueda, Yū Kobayashi, and Eito Kawahara, who bring the alien team to life as they grapple with the legacy of a long-lost humanity.
