Manga artist Chie Shinohara is returning to the historical genre with her latest project, Itsukinomiya Genshitan (The Records of Itsukinomiya Visions). The series is scheduled to premiere in the October issue of Shogakukan’s Cheese! magazine, which hits shelves on September 24. Shinohara confirmed the project on social media, noting that the series marks a return to Japanese historical themes for the veteran creator.
The narrative is framed as a historical mystery epic set in Ise Province during the Asuka period. The story focuses on an imperial princess tasked with serving the gods at the Ise Grand Shrine—a traditional role for unmarried royals of the era. According to early teasers, the plot is set in motion when a mysterious visitor arrives, triggering a sequence of events that promises to alter the course of history.
Shinohara is best known for her seminal shōjo work Red River (Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori), which remains a staple of the genre. The influence of her back catalog continues to be felt today, particularly with the ongoing television anime adaptation of Red River that premiered this past July. With the series currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Viz Media continuing to publish the Red River omnibus editions, the launch of Itsukinomiya Genshitan offers a fresh opportunity for readers to engage with Shinohara’s signature blend of historical drama and intrigue.
