The 40th issue of Akita Shoten's Weekly Shōnen Champion, released this Thursday, confirmed that the Oedo Fire Slayer (Hikuidori Ushūboro Tobigumi) manga has entered a temporary hiatus. The break follows the hospitalization of series artist Shinobu Seguchi due to an unspecified sudden illness. As of now, the series will not appear in the magazine until at least the following issue, scheduled for September 10.
Editorial staff at the magazine have stated that further information regarding Seguchi's recovery and the potential resumption of the series will be provided in future updates. It remains unclear if the manga will be prepared to return by the magazine's combined 42nd and 43rd issue, which is slated to ship on September 17. The manga, which adapts Shōgo Imamura's historical novel series, has been running in the magazine since April 2025, with its sixth compiled volume released earlier this August.
While the manga adaptation pauses, the broader franchise remains active. The source material, which earned the sixth Yoshikawa Eiji Bunko Award in 2021, spans 12 volumes and a spin-off collection. Additionally, a television anime adaptation titled Oedo Fire Slayer -The Legend of Phoenix- premiered earlier this year on January 11 and is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Readers following the manga's English release via the emaqi e-bookstore will have to wait for further announcements regarding the impact of this hiatus on the digital publication schedule.
