NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan has announced that Kazuya Konomoto, the writer behind the acclaimed anime ODDTAXI, is bringing his suspense manga Spinner Bait to live-action. The series is set to premiere on Fuji TV in June, with subsequent availability on Japanese streaming platforms FOD and TVer.
The story centers on Kōta Mitsui, a high school student who joins what he believes to be a fishing club, only to discover it's a vigilante organization called "Spinner Bait." This group uses blackmail to ensnare criminals. As Mitsui ascends the ranks, he becomes entangled in a series of serial killings plaguing the town.
Seishirō Katō takes on the lead role of Kōta Mitsui. The cast also includes Nao Takahashi as Tsuyoshi Tamaki, the second-in-command of Spinner Bait, and Kaname Yoshizawa as the enigmatic member Yusuto Takahashi. Ryotaro Hirase is directing the series, with scripts penned by Tomomi О̄kubo, Masaki Nishigaki, and Shintaro Mitani.
Konomoto's Spinner Bait manga was serialized in Gentosha's Comic Birz from 2010 to 2011. This adaptation follows Konomoto's continued success, including his work on the ODDTAXI anime and its film continuation, The Last Blossom, as well as the RoOT/Route of Odd Taxi manga spinoff which also received a live-action adaptation. Konomoto also recently launched a new manga, Kami Kill, with artist Ryō Yamasaki.
