Canadian artist The Weeknd brought a unique blend of Japanese pop culture to his "After Hours Til Dawn Tour" this past weekend. During the tour's stop at the Belluna Dome in Saitama, fans were treated to a special visual presentation produced by NieR:Automata director Yokō Tarō and featuring vocals from Yoko Takahashi. The segment incorporated iconic imagery from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise alongside samples of Takahashi’s legendary opening theme, "A Cruel Angel's Thesis."
Official social media accounts for both the NieR and Evangelion franchises confirmed the partnership, highlighting the performance as a unique visual experience for attendees. This is not the first time the tour has leaned into Japanese creative talent; earlier this year, the tour featured a video collaboration directed by filmmaker Takashi Miike during a stop in Brazil.
For those following the Evangelion franchise, this collaboration carries extra weight as Yokō Tarō is currently attached to the development of a brand-new series. Announced earlier this year during the "Evangelion:30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion" festival, the project remains a major point of interest for the industry. While the tour continues its run through Jakarta, Singapore, and South Korea, it remains to be seen how these high-profile creative crossovers might influence the aesthetic direction of the upcoming Evangelion project.
