Virtua Fighter Crossroads has been officially revealed by Sega and Ryu ga Gotoku Studio, with a planned 2027 release. The announcement came during Friday's Summer Games Fest, showcasing a new trailer that introduced the fighter Cielo and teased an "unconventional new approach to the fighting game genre." Despite this new direction, Sega stated the game will uphold the series' legacy of pure, realistic combat and simple controls.
The trailer described the upcoming title as featuring "A city you've never seen, A story you've never heard, A totally new Virtua Fighter." The franchise, known for its pioneering 3D graphics and unique three-button control system, last saw a main installment with Virtua Fighter 5 in 2006, followed by Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown in 2010. More recently, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown was released in 2021, with subsequent updates and versions like Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage appearing on various platforms, including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2.
A dedicated showcase for Virtua Fighter Crossroads is scheduled for June 6 at 9:00 a.m. JST (8:00 p.m. EDT), where more details are expected to be revealed. The Virtua Fighter franchise also spawned a television anime adaptation in 1995, which is currently available for streaming.
