The next original film in the Sword Art Online franchise has been revealed as Sword Art Online -Integral Domain-, with a planned theatrical debut in 2028. The story, penned by original creator Reki Kawahara, will explore events following the anime's Alicization arc.
Reprising their iconic roles are Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna. The film is being brought to life by A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio, with Shingo Adachi, known for his chief animation director work on earlier Sword Art Online seasons, taking the director's chair. Yumiko Yamamoto is handling character designs, while Animec is set for distribution.
The project was first teased as a "brand-new original film project" in November 2022 during an event celebrating the anime's 10th anniversary. A subsequent teaser at the "Yuna First Live" concert in April confirmed the development of a new movie, described as an original story.
The Sword Art Online franchise, which began as a web novel by Reki Kawahara in 2001, has expanded into a vast multimedia enterprise. Beyond the main novels and anime series, it includes multiple spin-off novels, manga, films, and a planned live-action series. This new film follows the two-part movie series based on the Sword Art Online: Progressive novels.
